Six hundred lucky children jetted off on the day trip of a lifetime after being selected in Monarch’s nationwide appeal to make education fun. Three schools, allocated 200 seats each, were given exclusive use of a Monarch plane yesterday, with a range of fun activities in the air and on the ground.

Harris Academy Beckenham departed on the Gatwick flight to Gibraltar and visited attractions including St Michael’s Cave and the Great Siege Tunnels, after a geography lesson during their flight. Icknield Community College left on the Manchester flight to Verona and learned the real story of Romeo and Juliet, complemented with an acting lesson during the flight. Fulbrook Middle School departed on the Birmingham flight to Dubrovnik and spent their day exploring the ancient city walls after a history lesson in the air.

Rebecca Hickey, Head Teacher of Harris Academy Beckenham, said: “Harris Academy Beckenham is absolutely delighted to have won the ‘best day trip ever’ to Gibraltar. We are a fully comprehensive academy serving an area of south east London that includes areas of high deprivation. Many of our students had not experienced the thrill of flying before.”

Monarch Airlines MD Kevin George said: “The spirit of the children yesterday was fantastic. Our appeal has received a phenomenal response and it’s certainly something that we will consider offering other schools in the future.”
