York will be the No1 short break destination this year outside London, according to Superbreak.

The prediction was made after the holiday company looked at which cities were in the Top 10 getaways in 2013.

York beat Edinburgh for the first time to take the top spot. With exciting new attractions such as York’s Chocolate Story, the Star Inn the City restaurant and, of course, the Grand Depart in July, the historic city is expected to remain at No1 in 2014.

The popular destination, which already boasts tourist attractions such as York Minister (above), The National Railway Museum and The Jorvik Centre has seen bookings through short break specialist Superbreak increase by 8% since 2012.

The company’s annual booking trends report, found that the top 10 destinations for short breaks, excluding London, has remained steady for the past few years, with areas offering culture and things to see proving the most popular. New additions into the 2013 list are Harrogate and Liverpool, replacing Glasgow and Birmingham which both appeared in the top 10 in 2011 and 2012.

Most Popular UK Destinations for Short Breaks in 2013:

  1. York
  2. Edinburgh
  3. Manchester
  4. Windermere & South Lakes
  5. Stratford-upon-Avon & Area
  6. Blackpool
  7. Leeds
  8. Liverpool
  9. Harrogate
  10. Newcastle & Gateshead

There was further good news for God’s Own County, as Yorkshire was the most popular place to visit outside of London, with those in Northumberland, Cleveland, Edinburgh and Yorkshire preferring to holiday there.

Jane Atkins at Superbreak said: “York has so much to offer, whether it’s exploring the history, visiting the museums or simply indulging in some retail therapy, it’s a deserving winner and continues to grow in popularity with recent additions like York’s Chocolate Story, the new Star Inn the City restaurant and, of course, the Grand Depart in July.

“We have seen that the increase in petrol prices has obviously encouraged people to stay closer to home. However, with a vast range of rail inclusive packages and so many places easily accessible on the network within just a few hours, finding a new place to explore is easier than ever.”
