Dog friendly holidays on the rise

Is your pooch so pampered you want to take them away with you? Well, they don’t have to be booked into kennels any more as dog friendly holidays are on the increase.

Self-catering accommodation specialists holidaycottages.co.uk has seen bookings from families with dogs increase by more than 11 per cent in the last year – and a quarter of all bookings now include a four-legged friend.

“Dogs are an important part of family life,” says James Morris of holidaycottages.co.uk James Morris, “The ccan improve your overall holiday experience as you are sure to make the most of the great British outdoors with its wide open spaces, 450 dog friendly beaches and numerous dog friendly pubs and restaurants.

“In addition, as a dog owner myself, I know it can be an upsetting experience leaving a beloved pet in kennels and that lots of time on a precious holiday can be spent worrying about the four-legged friend left at home.”

Taking a dog on holiday is a considerably cheaper option too . . . the cost in one of the company’s dog-friendly cottages is just £20 per dog, per week, compared to an average charge of anywhere between £12 and £25 per night in kennels.

According to Morris, more than 50 per cent of the company’s 1,600 properties are dog-friendly thanks to large enclosed gardens with direct access to footpaths and open countryside for long walks.

It’s not only cottages that welcome pets either. Travelodge is getting in on the dog-friendly act by allowing pooches to stay. The budget hotel group has announced it now welcomes dogs in all of its hotels across the UK – more than 500 places to stay. The company claims that up to 13,000 dogs are taking a summer break with their owners in a Travelodge this summer.

A cottage or a hotel not good enough? There’s even a site now that allows you to find the best place to take your dog on holiday. Your Dog Holidays has accommodation options from barges (above) to farmhouses.
