Haven park’s new £2m restaurant

Perran Sands

I flew down to Cornwall on Wednesday for the opening of Haven’s new £2million restaurant and bar at Perran Sands Holiday Park. What an incredible setting as you can see from the picture above that I took from the helicopter. The eco-friendly park sits in the dunes above stunning Perranporth beach, a surfer’s paradise eight miles from Newquay.

Perran Sands Campervan

The new 400-seater Surf Bay restaurant reflects this. A restored VW campervan (above) – a family of least six people can eat in it – takes pride of place, mini VWs adorn the walls, tables look like surf boards and a massive screen runs film of surfers riding the waves. Reclaimed wood, stone from local quarries and LED lighting all support Perran Sands’ Green Tourism gold award.

Visit Cornwall chief Malcolm Bell, who cut the ribbon on Wednesday, said: “The restaurant gives families yet another experience and further proves that holiday parks have come a long way from those Hi-de-Hi days.”

Haven MD Tim Gibson said: “Surf Bay is a fantastic addition to the park and is appropriate for a seaside location. The local fish of the day is just one of the sustainable foods on the menu.

“We listen to what our customers want and that’s an escape from their urban environment and stresses of every day life where they can spend time as a family by the beach. That’s why we can boast that our holidays are a Breath of Fresh Air.”

Surf Bay is open for all meals. There’s breakfast (full English for £2.95), lunch and dinner with a range of tasty international dishes using local meat and sustainable fish. You can get anything from beer-battered fish and chips for £8.95 to Cajun chicken pasta for £7.95. Kids’ meals from £4.95.

Perran Sands, which has also turned Burger King into the fish and chip eatery Funky Fish, offers accommodation from mobile homes to safari tents and yurts and there’s a touring site where you can take your own tents or caravan. Facilities include pools, kids’ clubs, surf school and lots more.

Easter breaks at the park – one of 35 in the UK – start from £144 for three nights from March 29 in a deluxe caravan or £194 in a yurt, both sleeping six people.
