How to save money on a city break

Venice

This is just what you need to save money on a city break – a calendar to tell you where to visit and when, to get the cheapest deal.

Hotel search website trivago.co.uk has produced the diary to show the most affordable and most expensive months giving holidaymakers the chance to save hundreds of pounds.

For instance, Dubai is more pricey from October to February and cheapest from June to August. New York is better value in January and February and more expensive in September, October and December.

Savings can be huge, £130 a night by visiting Venice (above) in January rather than May, £49 a night by visiting Prague in February rather then May.

The calendars feature 45 cities across six continents, showing average monthly hotel prices in a colour-coded scale to advise travellers when to book. These averages are calculated from more than 700,000 hotels on over 175 booking sites over the last three years.

Denise Bartlett of Trivago said: “Seasonal differences obviously play a large part in price trends – hotel prices in many European destinations are at their lowest in January and highest in warmer months.

“However, the travel advice calendars show that waiting just two months to book a break in Paris (from June to August) could potentially save travellers up to £61 a night. The maximum potential savings in Venice is an average of £130 per night – a significant amount of money in one of Europe’s most expensive cities.”

Trivago has also put together a chart (above) of the 10 most popular destinations for Brits to show the best deals.
