The National Sea Life Centre Birmingham celebrates its 20th birthday this summer with some great new attractions.

National Sea Life Centre Birmingham

The Centre is home to the UK’s only 360° Ocean Tunnel – the world’s first when it opened 20 years ago. It’s had an anniversary makeover and the tunnel is now completely transparent (above) and transports visitors to life beneath the ocean’s waves, without the need for a snorkel!

New this summer is Clownfish Kingdom, an array of interactive tanks so visitors can come nose-to-fin with species including Clownfish, Blue Tangs, Marine Comet and Tassled filefish.

The Centre has also launched Behind the Scenes Tours. For just £3.50 per person, guests will be able to journey deep behind the scenes with one of the expert aquarists to discover how the attraction cares for the thousands of marine and fresh-water creatures.

Amy Langham, boss at the Centre, says: “When we first opened our doors in 1996, we were the UK’s only inland Sea Life Centre and immediately became home to hundreds of freshwater and marine life.

“Twenty years on, we have over 2,000 creatures and a 4D Cinema, not to mention the fantastic developments our Breed, Rescue, Protect programme has made. We have critically endangered Axolotls that began breeding last year, as well as an army of Golden Mantella frogs, which are facing a high risk of extinction in the wild.

“Year on year, we’ve invested time and effort into offering new and exciting experiences as well as introduced some incredible creatures from across the world’s oceans so that our guests can just enjoy an incredible day out and make memories together with their family and friends. Here’s to the next 20 years!”

The 2,000 creatures include sharks, a rescued Giant Green Sea Turtle, jellyfish, piranha, octopus and rays.
