Ship horn concert to ring in 2013

This is a first – a cruise ship horn concert! P&O Cruises’ Azura is leading the unique 10-minute New Year’s Eve extravaganza in Madeira’s Funchal Bay. The liner and five other ships, including local ferry Lobo Marinho, will perform “2012 Last Sunset Symphony” at sunset.

The concert will use the vessels’ whistles, which have their own frequency and tuning equivalent to music notes. A local composer will stand at the harbour’s tower and, through radio connection to all ships’ bridges, will direct a crew musician on Azura with the rhythm beat in order to have all the whistles synchronised according to the score.

Organised by Madeira Tourism Office, the score was composed by Francisco Loreto, specifically for Azura and other ships docked or anchored in Funchal Bay. Azura’s captain, Robert Camby said; “We are privileged to be involved in such an original event. This kind of cruise ship concert is unique on a global scale and it will certainly create a memorable end to 2012 for our passengers. I can’t wait to take part.”
