With its gorgeous beaches, incredible wildlife, amazing cultural sights and great-value hotels, Sri Lanka is the best wallet friendly holiday destination according to holiday company Kuoni.

Hotels in Sri Lanka appear at number 1, 3 and 8 on the top 10 list of best-value worldwide holidays in the Travel Edit by Kuoni 2014.

The Maldives is the second most popular wallet-friendly destination on the list, with the simple and relaxed Biyadhoo island providing great value with prices starting from £1,439 per person for a seven night all-inclusive holiday.  Other worldwide destinations which make it onto the list include Thailand, Mauritius and Barbados.

Kuoni says is has seen a rise for ‘exotic holidays for less’ over the last three years and says it has introduced more high quality three and four star properties in many of its popular long-haul destinations.

The value of the pound in many of Kuoni’s key destinations is also strong; making the total cost of a long-haul holiday, including on-the-ground expenses, comparable with a European escape.  Club Bentota (above), set on a peninsula on Sri Lanka’s west coast between Colombo and Galle, tops the list of wallet-friendly hotels with prices from just £770 per person for a seven-night all-inclusive holiday.

The top 10 list is as follows:

  1. Club Bentota, Sri Lanka
  2. Biyadhoo, Maldives
  3. Mount Lavinia, Sri Lanka
  4. Kuredu Island Resort, Maldives
  5. Sugar Cane Club Hotel & Spa, Barbados
  6. The Regent Cha Am Beach resort, Thailand *
  7. Kantary Bay Hotel, Phuket – Thailand
  8. Cinnamon Citadel, Kandy – Sri Lanka
  9. Velidhu Island Resort, Maldives
  10. Veranda Pointe Aux Biches, Mauritius

* Formerly Holiday Inn Regent Beach Cha’am

Kuoni’s report looks at the changing habits of British travellers based on sales data over the last three years and takes into account the total cost of the holiday including flights, accommodation and transfers.

“People are finding that their holiday money can stretch much further on a long-haul trip than it does in Europe, which is why our top wallet-friendly destination list is made up entirely of long-haul locations,” said Derek Jones, managing director, Kuoni.
