Brits are making lifestyle changes to save up to £200 a month for a summer escape. Nearly half the nation has put a holiday as their top spending priority in 2013 and are prepared to make sacrifices elsewhere to make sure they get one, according to Thomas Cook research.

One in five said they would take a second job or do extra overtime to ensure their holiday whilst nearly a quarter would be more than happy to miss out on some nights out which could help save £200 per couple a month.

New Year’s resolutions will not only create a healthier lifestyle but a healthier holiday balance too with one in 10 set to save a packet – an average of £84 per month – when they give up smoking. One in five are also prepared to miss out on daily treats which could help save a weighty sum as well as shedding a few pounds. In six months over £100 could be saved just by giving up a daily chocolate bar or packet of crisps. Doing without a weekly take-out would add an extra £240 in the pot while going without the caffeine fix of a daily cup of coffee would save a whopping £353.

One in five say they are prepared to become more savvy with their grocery shopping and will check out what they can save by swapping supermarkets, which could add up to £68 a month, while an entrepreneurial 22 per cent said they will be having a clear out at home for a car boot sale or to sell on ebay.
