Exeter has been named as one of Britain’s Top 10 places to live and work.

The Devon city is described as a “growing country city” in a Sunday Times ‘hot list’ of the best UK locations for young families and professionals to buy a property or find a good job. So what else has Exeter got to offer? Here’s the Top 10 things to do in Exeter.

Haldon Forest

With over 40km of walking and cycling trails to suit all abilities, a cycle skills area, pump track and play areas for the younger members of the family, Haldon Forest Park is the perfect choice for a family day out. Until February 2015 there will be a Gruffalo themed activity trail (and a Gruffalo sculpture hidden in the woods).  Ridge Café is open every day and there is also a bike hire business on site as well as Segway Southwest and Go Ape.

Medieval Trail

Discover Exeter’s medieval past, find out about many surviving gems and the events that helped to shape this period of Exeter’s past. On this trail, guide yourself to 8 information panels. At each site, find out about the buildings of medieval Exeter and key events that affected the people during this time. For children, there are quizzes and puzzles to solve along the way so bring paper and a pencil with you. The tour of Medieval Exeter starts in Castle Street. From here, the route continues into Cathedral Yard where you will find out the jewel in Exeter’s crown, Exeter Cathedral and many other historic sites. The trail concludes at St. Stephen’s House where Exeter’s importance as an ecclesiastic centre is explored.

Exeter City Wall

A fascinating self-guided tour. Pick up a free leaflet from Exeter Visitor Information & Tickets and discover the exciting history of Exeter’s City Wall. The oldest parts of the wall are almost 2,000 years old and it has been the site of many important historical events. Around 70% still exists. Follow the trail to discover colourful information panels at strtegic points. There are quizzes and puzzles for children to do, so bring paper and pencils.

Powderham Castle, Exeter

Powderham Castle, the 600-year-old home of the Earl and Countess of Devon near Exeter, makes an ideal place to visit for people of all agess. Families are invited to picnic in the beautiful grounds, enjoy a guided tour of the Castle and spend time in the walled garden play area and pets corner, home to many friendly Powderham pets. Powderham Castle is open daily (except Saturdays) from 11am to 5.30pm with guided tours running daily.

Killerton House

National Trust Killerton House and Gardens
Killerton, one of the largest National Trust estates, holds a glorious Veitch landscaped garden surrounded by parkland, a fine 18th-century house with a renowned historical fashion collection and a beautifully placed chapel. All year round, there is plenty to explore both inside the House and in the surrounding countryside for all ages. Seasonal events include the Cider and Apple festival, Crikey! It’s Vintage and Christmas at Killerton, as well as the free, timed Killerton Parkrun every Saturday morning.
