UK's biggest waterpark opens

It’s opening on Saturday, just in time for the school holiday fun – Alpamare Scarborough, the UK’s biggest waterpark costing a cool £14 million.

And bosses claim it will rival waterparks in Dubai and Florida. We’ve yet to try it so if you get there before us, put your review in the comment box below.

It looks great with slides, a giant indoor wave pool erupting every 30 minutes with metre high waves, outdoor garden pool and infinity pool with massage jets and whirlpools.

There’s an area for younger children with more than 35 interactive features including spray jets, tipping cones, water guns, a dual slide and a giant overhead tipping bucket. A terrace overlooks Scarborough’s North Bay and landscaped gardens with sunbeds, pool bar and restaurant.

The waterpark overlooking North Bay on the Yorkshire coast will help boost visitors to Scarborough, the second most visited town in England after London.

The slides, all different with an alpine theme, are up to 120 metres long and are for four-person inflatables, double inflatables and racing mats. The Black Run is the steepest and fastest slide with a drop of 11 metres. The Cresta Run is based on the world-famous run in St Moritz, with riders propelled, head first, down the equivalent of a black ski run.

At more than 116 metres long, the family-friendly Olympic Run is the longest slide. Signature ride Snow Storm is a must for a group of daredevils. Pumping 20,900 litres of water per minute, four person inflatables hurtle riders down more than 14 metres of twists and turns.

Alpamare boss Dr Anton Hoefter said: “After years in the planning and many months in construction, I am absolutely delighted we are welcoming guests to a world class, state of the art waterpark.”

Cllr Derek Bastiman, leader of Scarborough Borough Council, said: “This is the most exciting thing we have seen open in Scarborough in recent years.”

Sir Gary Verity, boss of Welcome to Yorkshire said: “Scarborough is in the middle of a huge renaissance with massive investment in the harbour, Scarborough Spa, Open Air Theatre and hotels. The opening of the waterpark will be another terrific asset for the town which is now the second most visited holiday destination outside of London.’’

Open 10am to 10pm. Family ticket £60. For more details
