Yorkshire attraction launches via ferrata extension

A Yorkshire attraction has launched an extension to its via ferrata.

How Stean Gorge has added the three new routes – Burma Bridge, Postman’s Walk and Tyrolean Traverse – to its existing via ferrata, a series of cable walkways allowing visitors to make the most of exploring the gorge by being clipped onto a network of iron cables, staples and bridges fixed to the walls and ledges.

Since opening in 2009, the via ferrata (which takes its name from the Italian for Iron Bridge) has grown to become a popular attraction at the gorge.

Now How Stean, which was once also known as ‘Little Switzerland’ is adding the ‘Ultimate Via Ferrata’, a series of high level cable walks enabling visitors to test their nerve and head for heights by traversing from one side to the other at heights of up to nine metres above the floor of the gorge.

The new walkways are:
Burma Bridge – two hand cables and one foot cable
Postman’s Walk – one top cable and one to walk on
Tyrolean Traverse – one overhead cable and a seated pulley system (not to be confused with a zipwire)

Stan Beer, partner at How Stean Gorge, says: “Our via ferrata has proved to be a real draw for visitors, both young and not so young, as a safe way of getting an adrenaline buzz and trying something completely different.

“We’ve designed the new walkways to add another dimension to the experience that will offer a fantastic, previously unseen, view of the gorge.”

The half-day adventure costs £45 per person. See www.howstean.co.uk/activities/via-ferrata/
