Virgin Atlantic launches “weepy warning” for movie watchers

I’ve often watched a movie on a plane and ended up blubbing – mascara running and searching for a tissue!

Virgin Atlantic has come up with a “weepy warning” to let customers know if they are about to watch a tearjerker.

Blockbusters such as Lion, Moonlight and Bridget Jones’ Baby are amongst the most popular films on board Virgin Atlantic flights this summer – and, needless to say, there have been a few tears.

The light-hearted warnings appear before a selection of 13 movies, and advise customers to have their tissues ready and to press the call button if they need a shoulder to cry on. It’s the second time Virgin Atlantic has added the notices – the airline also introduced them in 2011 to coincide with a particularly collection of emotional films.

Carly Swaine, Cabin Crew at Virgin Atlantic, said: “It’s well-known that emotions are heightened on a flight, and we often spot customers shedding a tear over a movie. Many of our customers are jetting off on adventures such as round the world trips, honeymoons or visiting distant relatives so it’s not surprising that movies create stronger emotions in the sky.

“There are a few real tearjerkers on board at the moment so the notifications help reassure customers that it’s fine to let their feelings show, or to call the crew for a cup of tea.”

Virgin Atlantic offers a wide selection of seatback entertainment on each flight including over 680 hours of the latest movies, TV shows, documentaries, box sets, music and games for adults and children. Inflight entertainment is updated each month, and there are currently 13 movies displaying emotion notices before they start.

The emotion note says: “The following film contains scenes of a sensitive nature which may cause viewers to cry, weep, sob, wail, howl, bawl, bleat or mewl! Please alert cabin crew If you need a tissue or a shoulder to cry on!”
