VisitEngland has launched a new Facebook app to try to convince people to take more holidays in England.

The 101 Things To Do Before You Go Abroad app includes a host of English experiences, from star gazing in Europe’s first International Dark Sky Reserve in Exmoor’s National Park, to climbing England’s highest peak, Scafell Pike.

VisitEngland research shows that 60 per cent of the population feel more proud to be British following the events of 2012, including the Jubilee and the Olympics and 20 per cent will take more breaks at home as a result.

Visitors to the app can nominate their favourite English experiences by uploading suggestions in a number of categories including Food & Drink; Arts & Culture; Health & Fitness; History & Heritage; Wildlife & Nature; and Because it’s awesome!

Suggestions will be pinned onto a map of England so other visitors can view and then vote for their favourites. Anyone to nominate or vote will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win a weekend break away.

The app will be live until March 10 and a selection of nominations will be announced during English Tourism Week (March 16-24), with the full 101 announced on St George’s Day, April 23.

James Berresford, VisitEngland’s Chief Executive said: “There is so much on offer in England which is capable of taking our breath away. We hope this app will inspire Britons everywhere to take a holiday in England and remember that this is one of the best, if not the best destination in the world.”
