Arrgh – it’s Pirate Day in Cornwall

Pirate Day in Cornwall

Head down to Cornwall this Bank Holiday Monday for Pirate Day. The event – that will allow you to channel your best Captain Jack Sparrow – is taking place on St Michael’s Mount, one of Cornwall’s most famous landmarks.

The island, which lays 400 yards out to sea, has a castle, sub-tropical gardens, a 14th century church, a host of restaurants and a cafe offering fine cream teas and views over the Lizard Peninsular.

Kids can take part in Pirate Day by listening to stories and joining in with singing sea shanties, while there will be prizes for those dressed in pirate garb.

Elsewhere, they can explore and learn with a castle quiz that leads them through the castle hunting for clues. And there is also a fun nature trail in the Mount gardens where children can seek out exotic plants and hunt for Mount pets – with a prize for every child. The Mount also has a dedicated push-chair park to park buggies, baby-changing facilities and hip carriers to enable parents to carry babies and toddlers up the castle.

The Mount is separated from the mainland by a causeway and covered by sea at high water. You can leave the mainland behind on foot and walk in the footsteps of pilgrims who have crossed the causeway throughout the ages, o, when the tide floods over the historic footway, hop onboard a boat and motor into the harbour where trading ships once moored.
