Stay in the same place as King Charles I during the Siege of Gloucester in 1643.

Posh holiday company Abercrombie & Kent’s self-catering arm, Abercrombie & Kent Villas has added Painswick Court to its list of holiday homes.

Painswick Court is a superb example of stately English style. Nicknamed ‘Queen of the Cotswolds’, it lies in the historic town of Painswick and offers a country retreat experience for up to 14 guests.

Combining ancient architecture with high-spec modern facilities, there is a magnificent panelled courtroom with a 16th century fireplace, an original hidden stone staircase and an impressive wooden panelled dining room seating up to 20. The main door even retains original gunshot scars from the Siege of Gloucester four centuries ago.

There are seven beautifully furnished guestrooms, including the King Charles Suite where the monarch slept, a fully equipped gym, vaulted games room with snooker table, and separate spa with sauna. Outside, there is an attractive deck with a large fire pit, a BBQ area and an outdoor Jacuzzi.

Seven nights’ self-catering is from £740 per person.
