Beat new airport mobile phone charge rules

If you fall foul of the new mobile phone charge rules at airport security, a company is offering an emergency collect-and-ship service from Heathrow, that will pick up your device from airport in 90 minutes and send it to your destination.

The new rules stipulate that passengers carrying electronic devices in their hand luggage will have to prove they can be powered up or turned on during security checks – and any traveller who cannot turn on their phone, tablet or laptop at the airport will be unable to board the plane.

Many airlines and flight paths will be affected, meaning travellers may not realise they are at risk of being separated from their phones (or their flight) until they reach the airport. If your battery dies en route to your plane, and you are unable to charge it, you face a choice: leave your device on home soil, or miss your flight.

The new service by First Luggage provides a pre-flights solution with prices for a mobile phone (up to 0.5kg weight) from the UK to the USA starting from £39.99 one-way, while laptops and tablets (up to 2.5kg) can be shipped for £59.99 . A £25 surcharge is added for the emergency shipping option.

The company is also offering a 20 per cent discount for new customers on the service.
