Branson bags himself a vineyard

Mont Rochelle Hotel and Mountain Vineyard

He’s got a sunshine island, safari parks, a ski lodge, London restaurant and even a space centre! Soon Sir Richard Branson will be able to celebrate his success with a glass of his own vino! He’s buying a hotel and vineyard to add to his Virgin Limited Edition collection of luxury retreats.

The deal to own Mont Rochelle Hotel and Mountain Vineyard in South Africa is almost complete and Sir Richard said: “I’m thrilled. It will be a ‘must visit’ winelands experience in South Africa and a fantastic addition to the Virgin Limited Edition portfolio.”

Mont Rochelle in Franschhoek has a fabulous history dating as far back as 1688. In 2001, it was bought by Miko Rwayitare, the South African visionary entrepreneur.

Albert Gatare, family member of the late Miko Rwayitare, said: “It is with warmth that Sir Richard Branson is welcomed as the new owner of this gem in the crown of Franschhoek. With both his and Virgin Limited Edition’s ambitious plans for the future of Mont Rochelle, the family of the late Miko Rwayitare is certain that Miko’s vision of creating a small slice of heaven on earth will be realised.”

The 22-bedroom hotel – with a mountain backdrop in the heart of Franschhoek, just 45 minutes from downtown Cape Town – will close for refurbishment following the sale and re-open in August.

The retreat promises to attract food and wine lovers visiting the world-famous wider Cape Town region and holidaymakers going on safari in South Africa to Sir Richard’s luxurious Ulusaba Private Game Reserve.
