The Northern Lights are now closer than ever thanks to new flights to Bodo in Norway.

The new direct route by Norwegian airline Fly Nonstop will start in October from London City Airport and flights will take three hours. There will be two flights a week on Mondays and Fridays and tickets will start from £270 return.

Bodo is famed for its Northern Lights – and with 2013 being said by Nasa to be the best viewing year this century, this winter could be an ideal time to visit. It is also home to Saltstraumen, the world’s strongest maelstrom whirlpool, as well as picturesque hiking opportunities; bird watching; and easy access to the Lofoten Islands.

The Aurora Borealis are usually visible from late September to late March and Bodø being located just above the Arctic Circle, but beneath the Auroral Oval means the chances of seeing this stunning natural phenomenon are good.
