Four in 10 bust holiday spends budget

Skyscanner

Where does all your money go on holiday? Skyscanner has a bit of an idea with a new survey showing how four in 10 of us overspend while away. Holidaymakers are putting away £247 each ready to blow on a week’s break.

A family of four is budgeting for a total of £800, £247 for each adult and £149 for each of two children – nearly £800. But holidaymakers admitted that on their last holiday they bust the budget with more than half spending more on food than expected and a third splashing out more on nights out.

Travel search site Skyscanner says British holidaymakers – 36 million fly out each year – hit their wallets before getting on the plane with one in five saying they overspent on airport shopping.

More than a quarter plan to set aside more cash this year compared to last, budgeting £247 per adult and £149 per child for holiday spending money. Younger parents, aged under 25, spend more on their kids and less on themselves than any other age group, setting aside just £211 each for themselves but budgeting £152 per child. People aged 18 to 25 are also more likely to overspend with half admitting to going over budget during their last holiday – 36 per cent overspending by as much as £200 a week and even more going wild in airport shops.

Skyscanner’s Victoria Bailie said: “With so many British holidaymakers spending more than they intended during their last holiday, money management clearly goes out of the window as soon as travellers reach the airport. In-resort costs differ from one destination to another so it can be worthwhile researching these costs before jetting off. However with many people spending more than they budget, it would seem British holidaymakers are far from thrifty when having fun in the sun.”
