There’s no closing hours in this pub, you’ll be able to prop up the bar for as long as you like. The Grey Coat in Cumbria – with original bar, piano and cast iron tables – has been renovated into a country cottage for hire.
The Grade II listed house on St Helens Street, Cockermouth was a pub for more than 100 years up until last year. The owners of the four-star cottage with four bedrooms kept many of the original features and refurbished the seating.
As well as the dining room with long table to seat six, Grey Goat House has a stainless-steel kitchen with range cooker and a decked beer garden. And Cockermouth’s Jennings Brewery is only 400 metres along the street so you can easily stock up your own bar!
A week in June costs from £610 and three-night breaks from £420. Cockermouth is a great Lakeland base, with a weekly market, good pubs and independent shops as well as Wordsworth’s birthplace. Bassenthwaite (six miles) and Loweswater (eight miles) are the nearest lakes and Maryport on the coast is a 15-minute drive.
