Heart-throb Robbie Williams is starring in a concert 7,600ft up in the Alps. The former Take That singer will perform in the Austrian ski resort of Ischgl as part of his Swing Both Ways tour with his Big Band.
The concert at lunchtime on May 3 will mark the end of the skiing season. In a highly technical operation, a massive stage will be constructed at the top of the mountain. Stars are either helicoptered in or taken up the mountain by snowmobile from the Tirolean ski village. It’s the first time Robbie will have performed in such an unusual high altitude setting.
A crowd of 30,000, made up mostly of skiers and boarders, is expected. Fans can attend only by buying a ski-lift pass to get to the open air venue, rather than by the normal method of buying a concert ticket, as for the rest of the tour.
Andreas Steibl, tourist director of Ischgl, said: “We are delighted that Robbie has agreed to include our resort as part of his European tour – he is at the peak of his popularity so it is fitting that he should play a concert on a mountain peak.
“This is a very special season for us as we celebrate 50 years since the first cable-car opened here, and to get one of the world’s biggest stars to perform will be the perfect end to the winter. We consider it is a massive coup for us and we know that Robbie will put on a brilliant show. It is also 20 years since we held our first top of the mountain concert and since then we have had stars such as Elton John, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, Kylie Minogue, The Killers and Deep Purple play concerts here.”
Ischgl is at the western end of the Tirol, in the Paznaun Valley, and Robbie will perform against a backdrop of the Silvretta range of mountains. See www.ischgl.com
