12 years a slave

If you’ve seen BAFTA-winning movie 12 Years a Slave, go visit Louisiana with the film was made.

US specialist, Bon Voyage, is highlighting fly-drive holidays which include visits to plantation homes and historic towns used in the filming of the blockbuster.

The movie – also tipped for an Oscar on March 2 – is the true story of Solomon Northup’s fight for survival and freedom after being abducted and sold into slavery. It was directed by Steve McQueen and features stars including Chiwetel Ejiofor (above) and Brad Pitt.

Highlights of this nine-night ‘Heartbeat of the Deep South’ itinerary, which takes in Louisiana’s Cajun food, music and history, include visits to Lafayette, Baton Rouge and the sumptuous Plantation Homes of the Great River Road – including St Joseph, Destrehan and Felicity which were used as filming locations – along with the French Quarter of New Orleans.

Twin share prices start at £1,495 per person including return Heathrow or Manchester flights, mid-size car hire, nine nights’ room-only accommodation in Plantation Homes and character inns and a personalised road book with bespoke driving instructions.
