Lovers are booking city breaks for a Valentine treat, says Low Cost Holidays. Bookings are up nearly 50 per cent on last year and it’s not just traditional cities such as Rome, Venice and Paris that are proving most popular. Marrakech in Morocco, Tallinn in Estonia and Valletta (above) in Malta are all scoring high for romance.

Deputy MD Matt Hall said: “Customers are looking for value for money but still want a special treat for their loved ones and many of these alternative destinations offer great value four and five-star romantic hotels at fantastic prices. Valletta is a popular short break destination this Valentine’s, it’s just over three hours’ flying time from the UK, and offers warm weather, plenty of historic sites and incredible views of the Mediterranean. Eastern European cities including Budapest, Estonia’s Tallinn and Krakow are also great value destinations with much lower prices for all the holiday extras such as drinks, meals and local attractions.”

Prices over Valentine’s, with flights from Stansted, for two nights in a four-star hotel in Budapest start from £94 per person, three nights in a four-star hotel in Krakow from £138 per person and four nights in a five-star hotel in Valletta from £265 per person.
