Take time to discover Secret Greece

If you thought that a Greek holiday was a Mama Mia-style mix of fun in the sun and romance in the sands, think again – the country is inviting British tourists to discover Secret Greece, lesser-known gems out of the summer months.

Tourism minister Olga Kefalogianni (below) made the appeal to British tourists last week, telling your-hols.com: “There are many destinations in Greece that operate year-round – and some of them are less known. Mainland Greece has mountainous areas where you have ski resorts, places like Meteora (above) and Mount Olympus where there is incredible hiking among beautiful scenery – while some of the bigger islands are open for business outside the summer months.”

The minister also said that Greece’s off-season tourism offering is ideal for British tourists, appealing to our sense of adventure and long history of travelling. She said: “British travellers are more adventurous than other European nations with broader tastes, and they can find things to fulfill those needs in Greece.”

Her own personal choice for an off-season holiday would be to discover Corfu in winter: “When I go to Corfu in the winter I find it is the most romantic place – Greece in the summer is eternal.

“Everyone is so relaxed but if you visit at other times, you will find secrets about Greece that you will not find at other times of year.

“Secret Greece could be how romantic Corfu is in winter or what a great time one can have climbing Mount Olympus. It could be how much more interesting it is to discover monuments in Spring when it is cooler, or drink wines on a wine routes tour in the northern part of Greece.”
