Teletext Holidays reveals costs of holiday extras

Travel company Teletext Holidays is launching a drive towards more transparent holiday pricing.

The move comes after research by the company showed that the hidden extras that are charged above headline prices on flights can add up to £500 to a holiday for a family of four.

The company compared flights for three different holiday types – a family trip for four to Alicante, a stag holiday for seven in Malaga and a romantic trip for two to Paris – and checked prices from a number of different airlines.

The family trip for four to Alicante cost just £455.92 with Jet2 which offered the cheapest flights – but £488.86 were added on when taxes, APD, baggage and reserved seats were included. Likewise, the trip to Malaga would have cost £910 with British Airways, but saw £632.12 added in extra costs.

The couple’s trip to Paris fared little better. Flights for two with king-of-the-surcharge Ryanair would have cost £155.96, before a whopping £258.48 was added on in costs.

“With many people now opting for flights and accommodation-only breaks rather than full holiday packages, we wanted to find out if travellers are still getting a good deal,” said Mark Bloxham, Marketing Director at Teletext Holidays. “Many providers try to tempt customers in with incredibly low headline rates – but as this report demonstrates, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.”
