Tours to honour war heroes

Flanders Museum

Honour our war heroes on a Battlefields tour. To mark next year’s centenary commemorations of the anniversary of the First World War, rail holiday specialists Great Rail Journeys and Treyn are showcasing their collection of escorted tours to visit the memorials, cemeteries and museums.

The tours, featured in two new brochures, take you from London’s St Pancras into the heart of the western front area in France and Belgium in hours. The journey is part of the experience as you pass through the countryside of South East England into Northern France – a similar journey that was taken by the men nearly 100 years ago.

The tours are focused around the Ypres Salient and The Somme, which represented the “western front” between 1914 and 1918. Within this region, some of the fiercest fighting took place, and although many of the towns and cities have undergone restoration projects to bring them back to their former glory, there are many museums and preserved battlefields sites.

Great Rail Journeys’ tours start from £425 per person for the five-day Battlefields of Flanders including visiting the Flanders Museum (above) between April and October 2014. Others include: Armistice Commemorations from Lille, Lille, Flanders & The Somme, Battlefields From The Hermitage, Remembrance Day in Flanders, Bruges & The Battlefields of Ypres, Battlefields of Ypres & The Somme, Arras & The Somme Battlefields and Amiens & The Somme Battlefields.

Treyn’s battlefields tours start from £295 per person for the four-day Bruges & Ypres tour between April and October 2014. Others include: Remembrance Day In Ypres, In Flanders Fields, Flanders & The Somme, Arras & The Somme, Amiens & The Somme and Lille’s Battlefields.
