The Dutch today crowned a new king – Willem-Alexander – following the abdication of his mother Queen Beatrix after 33 years as queen. Thousands gathered outside the Royal Palace in Amsterdam’s Dam Square wearing the signature colour of the royal House of Orange to celebrate the Netherlands’ first king in more than a century.

King Willem and his wife Maxima appeared on the balcony with their three children to rapturous applause. Celebrations also include a royal boat parade along the River IJ setting sail from the EYE Film Institute Netherlands, past the Oeverpark (city park) to the Kop van Java and the concert hall Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ.

These are all places you can see and visit on a city break in beautiful Amsterdam which comes to life in spring, with spectacular flower displays throughout the parks and gardens. easyJet Holidays offers bargain breaks including two nights B&B at the four-star Blue Tower Hotel in Amsterdam, from Newcastle on June 19, from £123 per person.
