Who’s flying where from Manchester airport? And which is the No1 hotspot?

If you’ve ever wondered where everyone is flying off to from Manchester airport, we have the answer.

The airport has gone into its records over the past year to name the most popular destinations. And it has also revealed which hotspots are preferred by people from a number of regions.

Top overall destinations chosen by the 27.8 million passengers flying out of the UK’s third biggest airport, include Dubai, Orlando and New York.

Mancunians prefer Cancun, Hong Kong and Las Vegas, Scousers flock to Boston, Toronto and Vancouver, Yorkshire folk jet off to Islamabad, Beijing and Singapore, Scots opt for trips to Houston, Barbados and Montego Bay in Jamaica and the Welsh mostly fly to San Francisco and Los Angeles!

Orlando marks the most popular destination across the airport’s entire catchment area with more than 500,000 passengers each year, but each county has an interesting set of routes its inhabitants jet off to each year.

As well as offering passengers’ holidays, a lot of the routes are key for business and trade opportunities. For example, Houston is a top destination in Scotland due to the oil and gas links, whereas San Francisco offers a vital connection to the vibrant tech cities of Leeds and Manchester.

The Top 10 overall popular long-haul destinations from Manchester Airport are: Orlando, New York, Dubai, Cancun. Islamabad, Las Vegas, Barbados, Toronto, Hong Kong, Abu Dhabi

In recent years, Manchester Airport has added numerous long-haul routes to its network that in the UK, can only be found at the Northern hub, or in London. These include Beijing, San Francisco, Boston, Muscat, Houston and Hong Kong.

Dreamliner: More airlines are now flying from Manchester airport

Julian Carr, Aviation Director for Manchester Airport, said: “It is interesting to see the mix of destinations and how they differ from county to county across our vast catchment area.

“It is clear Manchester airport is providing vital access to people across the North and beyond to key sites of economic opportunity, holidays and the chance to visit loved ones abroad.

“Whether people want to fly from Liverpool to Las Vegas, Cheshire to Cancun, Newcastle to New York or Llandudno to LA, we will continue to strive to offer and secure all our 27.8m passengers a broad range of destinations.”

2018 will be the airport’s busiest ever year and will see the launch of direct flights to Seattle, with Thomas Cook Airlines, again making Manchester the only non-London airport in the UK with this route. It will also see the biggest ever investment in the airport as the £1bn transformation continues at pace.
