Fancy sleeping in a coffin?

It might sound macabre, but there’s a romantic story behind this one: you can stay in the coffin-shaped house that won one Georgian gent the hand of his future wife.

The canny Casanova built the pretty Grade II listed Coffin House in Brixham in 1736 to foil his future father-in-law, who said he’d sooner see his daughter in a coffin than married.  When built, so impressed the father-in-law that he blessed their marriage.

Today you can book the romantic retreat through Blue Chip Holidays from under £11 per person, per night. Destiny Lodge consists of two of the house’s upper floors and consists of two bedrooms that sleep four, featuring period furniture, beams, cosy double beds and built in wardrobes.

The living room on the first floor has period pieces, a large character fireplace and a dining table and four chairs overlooking the narrow alleyway beneath. A separate TV snug with a cosy sofa, seating for four, chest coffee table, a large flatscreen TV with Freeview and DVD player.

A cottage style kitchen, which features a butcher’s block, oak finished work surfaces and a pretty carved fire surround within which the cooker and fridge are situated.  There is also a utility room fitted with a freezer and washing machine.

Destiny Lodge can be booked from £299 for a week and from £227 for three nights.
