First inflight 3G mobile service launched

inflight 3G mobile service

Air Berlin has launched the world’s first inflight 3G mobile service with AeroMobile.

The company’s entire fleet will have the service installed, with its A330-200 the first aircraft being the first to enjoy the higher speeds the technology provides.

The inflight 3G network will allow flyers to get a quality and range of services much closer to those experienced on the ground. Faster browsing, bigger attachments, quicker posts, more responsive apps and gaming will all be available.

While 3G has been established for some time on the ground, deploying 3G over a satellite network has been a challenge, both technically and commercially.

“After enabling the first ever inflight connectivity with a mobile phone on a commercial aircraft in 2008, it’s extremely exciting that we now offer passengers 3G connectivity – another world first. This provides a significant change to the speed of connectivity for passengers using their phones inflight and supports their desire to always be connected”, said Kevin Rogers, CEO of AeroMobile who provide the service.

The service is easy to use; passengers simply turn on their phone to connect to the onboard 3G network and are billed directly by their home operator.

AeroMobile expects to role out 3G to other partner airlines over the coming year.
