One in four couples now get married abroad and Italy is still the favourite destination to tie the knot. MarryAbroad.co.uk says the country of romance and home of Romeo and Juliet came top in 2012 for the second year running.

The trend of smaller intimate European weddings was strong in 2012, with long haul destinations such as Bali and Australia falling so much in popularity they didn’t make the wedding destination site’s Top 10. New popular destinations included the Czech Republic, Malta and South Africa.

Charlotte Hand, co-founder of MarryAbroad.co.uk said: “We definitely found that couples have been more adventurous over the past year, in choosing locations for their weddings. There is still strong interest amongst UK couples for marrying by the sea – with beach ceremonies coming first in popularity. However the majority of this interest is for European beach resorts. Long-haul destinations such as the Caribbean have been less attractive, perhaps due to the economic climate.”

Top 10 destinations for 2012 were:

  1. Italy
  2. Greece
  3. Thailand
  4. Spain
  5. France
