Majorca has topped a survey for most popular holiday destination in Europe this summer.

The Balaeric hot spot held off competition from the Algarve, Ibiza, Malta, Turkey and Florida to top the poll of most popular destinations sold by lowcostholidays.com.

Meanwhile, Mexico, Dubai and the Dominican Republic led the list for the biggest year-on-year increases, while Egypt and Cyprus were the biggest losers thanks to civil unrest in the former and higher prices in the latter.

Marrakech was the top city break destination this summer, up 74 per cent year on year, with Rome, Barcelona and Prague also popular city break choices.

Tim Buckman of lowcostholidays said, “Majorca continues to be our top destination but many of our customers re-discovered Turkey over the summer, with its low-cost flights, wide choice of great value quality hotels and plenty of options to keep the kids happy and occupied.

“Malta, the Algarve and Ibiza were also really popular summer holiday choices with Malta showing growth of 34 per cent compared to last year and holidays to Ibiza up 15 per cent year on year.”
