Plymouth hosts British Firework Championships

British Firework Championships

Head to Plymouth next week for the renowned British Firework Championships that take place on Plymouth Sound.

Held on Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 August, six previous winners will go head-to-head to be crowned the ‘Champion of Champions’, firing their displays from the Mountbatten breakwater over the city’s natural amphitheatre.

According to Visit Plymouth, there are five great spots from which to watch the show. These are:

Plymouth Hoe

This classic viewing platform for the British Firework Championships has spectacular views over Plymouth Sound. People beginning to gather here and along Madeira Road from early evening, particularly if it’s warm, so to get a prime location it is well worth getting there early.

The Hoe also offers live entertainment on both nights, including fairground rides and refreshment stalls which will open at 2pm daily, and music which will feature on the performance stage from 6.30pm each evening courtesy of Heart FM.

The Mayflower Steps

This area of The Barbican is another great choice for those looking to watch the displays while enjoying an evening meal or drink at one of the many harbour-side restaurants and bars.

The Queen Anne’s Battery area

This marina is within easy walking distance from The Barbican via the lock gate, which is popular with many spectators who can stand out on the breakwater, a stone’s throw from the Mount Batten firing base. Mountbatten

Head to the Mountabatten pub for those who want to be at the forefront of the Fireworks action. This site is limited by the side-on view but offers a great ‘behind the scenes’ style experience as spectators can see the teams in action. www.hotelmountbatten.co.uk

This spot is located high above Plymouth Sound and offers a more rural viewing site surrounded by woodland, beaches and cliffs.
