See £20m Rembrandt painting in Devon

Rembrandt self-portrait

A ‘new’ Rembrandt painting has been discovered this week and valued at close to £20million.

Hanging in the former home of Sir Francis Drake, Buckland Abbey in Devon, the painting of the artist – previously thought to have been produced by one of his pupils – has been identified as the possible work of the Dutch master himself.

If you want to see it for yourself, the nearby Moorland Garden Hotel is offering guests a special spring package plus 2-for-1 entry to Buckland Abbey. Stay during April or May from £150 per room per night for dinner, B&B.

In the 13th century, Buckland Abbey was home to Cistercian monks. The Abbey, now a house with a combination of furnished rooms and interactive museum galleries, tells the story of how two seafaring adventurers – Sir Richard Grenville and Sir Francis Drake – changed the shape of the house and the fate of the country.

As well as casting an eye over the Rembrandt, visitors can explore the Buckland estate, the meadows, the orchards and the spring bluebells whilst enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the Tavy Valley.

Set in nine acres of picturesque moorland gardens on the western fringes of Dartmoor, the Moorland Garden Hotel has been recently refurbished and offers 44 bedrooms and suites. This is not the first time that the hotel has had a brush with the art world; paintings by local artists adorn the walls of the lounge and corridors and guests recently had an exclusive preview of a ‘Timmy Mallett original’ prior to the opening of an Easter exhibition of work by the former TV children’s presenter at Royal William Yard in Plymouth.
