Stablegate: now BA take beef off the menu

Boeing, British Airways, GECAS Finalize Deal for up to 10 777-300ERs

When flying out to Lagos with BA on Sunday, I was offered a menu that had the usual ‘beef or chicken’ choice, yet when the trolley came round, the choice was between lamb and chicken.

“Where’s the beef?” I asked. “Off for now, sir,” came the reply – and it’s true. After checking with the BA press office, it seems that while the stablegate horsemeat scandal continues, the airline has taken beef off the menu for flights from the UK and some European destinations until tests are carried out.

They issued us with the following statement:

“We provide the highest levels of catering for our customers and hold all of our suppliers to the most exacting standards possible.

Following the recent concerns over processed beef we have asked our suppliers to carry out specific DNA testing in addition to their regular, rigorous checks.

As a responsible company we have, as a precautionary measure, decided to replace all processed beef products with other meal options until our suppliers have been able to complete these tests.”

We’re asked BA when the tests might be done and beef given the all-clear and are awaiting a response. We’ll let you know when it’s in.
