States are best for Xmas bargains

This probably comes as no surprise but when it comes to Christmas shopping, the USA is the best holiday destination out there.

Research by a hotel booking site that looks at the average cost of a basket of Christmas presents across various destinations in the world shows that UK shoppers can buy all but two of the nine gifts cheaper in America than at home.

The Christmas shopping basket consists of nine popular Christmas presents including an iPad 2, the Fifty Shades… Trilogy and a Barbie Princess Doll. Other items include a bottle of Kim Kardashian perfume and a Toshiba Smart TV.

The basket was a massive 43 per cent cheaper when bought in the USA over the UK. The total cost of the nine items if bought in the UK came to £1,532 which was £481 more expensive than the USA, where it would set you back £1,051.

The most expensive destination to pick up gifts this winter is Spain, with the total basket setting shoppers back a pricey £1,618. Other popular European shopping destinations for Brits came in cheaper with the basket costing £1,349 in the Netherlands and £1,419 in Germany. However, Ireland also proved pricey at £1,526, just £6 cheaper than the UK.

The research was compiled by hotels.com and gift prices calculated  as the average cost from three local retailers in each country, then converted to GBP with exchange rates correct as of 27/11/12.
