City breaks not just for romantics

Budapest

City breaks were always seen as being perfect for loved-up couples. But more friends and family are now opting for them, according to easyJet Holidays. They have seen a 21 per cent increase in groups of pals and 18 per cent of families choosing short city breaks.

Yet, traditional seven-night holidays are as popular as ever so perhaps people are spoiling themselves with an extra few days away. The figures are released to coincide with the launch of Winter 2013 holidays on easyJet.com. Prices start from £96 per person for a two-night B&B break to Budapest (above), flying from Luton on November 11 and staying at the four-star Golden Park Hotel.

Seven-night winter sun holidays start from £139 per person, departing from Bristol on November 20 and staying on a self-catering basis at the Blue Sea Caleta Garden in Fuerteventura.

Amsterdam, Barcelona and Krakow are the most popular destinations for friends on city breaks. But destinations offering something different such as Reykjavik – from where you can see the Northern lights or visit the other natural wonders of Iceland – are among the fastest growing.

A three-night B&B break to Reykjavik, at the four-star Center Hotel Skjaldbreid costs £161 per person, flying from Manchester on November 28.

Marrakech and Barcelona are the most popular choice for family short breaks. While Barcelona benefits from doubling up as a city and beach destination, Marrakech offers plenty of hotels with pools within easy reach of the city centre. A four-star break to Marrakech for three nights B&B at the Hotel El Andalous costs £495 or a family of four, flying from Stansted on November 27.

The short break ski market also continues to expand with an increase of 18% in four-night breaks. Prices for a four-night trip to the four-star Les Balcons de Savoy in Chamonix on room only basis, flying from Bristol on November 7 costs £443 per person.

easyJet Holidays GM Mandy Round said: “It may feel like winter hasn’t ended yet, but if you like winter getaways, it is definitely worth looking at some of the bargains already on offer for next year. The earlier you book, the more likely you are to pick up one of the deals currently available. Don’t let the thought of paying up-front put you off though, as selected holidays are available with deposits from £50 per person and with the balance due only two weeks before departure.”
