Family holidays poll: Spotless rooms more important than child safety

Parents are more concerned about how clean their room is than their child’s safety when on their family holidays, says a new poll.

According to the study by Teletext Holidays, 24 per cent of parents said the cleanliness of hotel rooms is the most important concern for 24 per cent of parents, ranking above pool safety at 17 per cent and general safety in hotels (14 per cent).

When it comes to spending time on the beach, cleanliness was also the top concern said 19 per cent of the 1,000 parents questioned, with beach safety and the worry of sunburn or sunstroke coming second, both with 16 per cent.

Food ranked highly in parent’s preferences in the poll. Almost a quarter of those asked (23 per cent) said the variety of food on offer was a key factor in deciding which resort to book, outranking live entertainment and the availability of kids clubs.

A quarter of respondents also said cost was a factor in booking their holiday (25 per cent) beating review sites (19 per cent) and the star rating of accommodation (20 per cent).

Amy Patel of Teletext Holidays said: “While these new statistics reveal that parents are looking for high standards of food and cleanliness from their holiday accommodation – and at a competitive price as cost is also a top-ranking concern – we feel they also show that parents have come to expect high standards of safety in holiday accommodation, too.

“While it is good – and a mark of the travel market’s accomplishment – that parents feel comfortable enough that hotels and resorts will take the measures necessary to ensure all their guests are as safe as possible, we feel it is also important that parents remember to stay as alert to potential dangers on holiday as they would be at home.”
