New afternoon tea in Yorkshire

afternoon tea in Yorkshire

Next year seems set to be the one to be in Yorkshire. The Tour De France rocks up in July and the county has been voted one of the top destinations to visit in 2014, while British Airways has also picked Leeds as it’s top pick. To celebrate, one of its best hotels, The Devonshire Arms Country House Hotel & Spa is launching a new afternoon tea.

The tea in the hotel’s Burlington Restaurant is designed by the hotel’s new head chef Adam Smith, formerly of The Ritz.

Winner of The Observer’s Young Chef of The Year Award 2012 and Roux Scholarship Winner 2012, he has 10 years of culinary expertise and experience, and is hoping to gain a Michelin star at the restaurant, after the Burlington lost its star when previous chef  Steve Smith left the hotel earlier this year.

The tea features a host of classics: crustless sandwiches with various fillings and bread for local bakeries, two scones per person (one fruit and one plain) and deserts including mini apple crumbles, chocolate brownies and orange and cardamom macaroons.

“We aren’t trying to do anything too fancy,” says Adam, “rather we are trying to get great ingredients and let them speak for themselves.

Afternoon tea at the Burlington costs £28 per person, or £38 with a glass of Laurent Perrier. For those who are more cash conscious, there is a cream tea with scones, clotted cream, jams and a choice of teas and coffees for £12 per person.
