Say ‘I do’ at an underwater wedding

If you want to follow in the flipper steps of the happy couple above – you can have an underwater wedding at a resort in the Maldives.

Christopher and Janet – pictured on their special day – were the first couple to take their vows while taking the plunge under a special programme at the Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa Maldives.

Things went – aheam – swimmingly at the wedding, where the bride and groom had to say “I do” with sign language, the master of ceremonies held up the vows on a signboard, and the witnesses were exotic fish

The diving was arranged by Best Dive, who work in association with Centara to organise diving and snorkelling trips, and who also created the underwater wedding set and decor. Two days were needed to prepare the setting, a period that included a wedding rehearsal for the happy couple.

On the day of the wedding, Christopher and Janet along with their guests, members of Best Dive, staff members from the resort, and master of ceremonies Ibrahim Shaan, set out by catamaran to the edge of the reef that surrounds the resort.

The group then took the plunge.

Once the ceremony was completed, the newly-weds and their guests headed back onto dry land where they were taken by suitably decorated wedding buggy to their villa, where they cut the wedding cake and toasted their future with champagne.

The rate for an underwater wedding ceremony at Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa Maldives is $700 plus service and tax.

Virgin Holidays has seven nights’ all-inclusive at the resort in April 2014 from £2586 per person, including flights from London.
