What the Dickens?
Set your Great Expectations with a stay at Bleak House in Broadstairs, Kent. A NYE flight of fancy

Roll out the barrel
Head to the Tar Bar’l Festival (above) in Northumberland where the crowds in fancy dress take part in a parade where they carry tar-filled whisky barrels on their heads. The parade ends in the centre of the town as the barrels are thrown onto a bonfire with the cry of “be damned to he who throws last!.” The procession is thought to be an ancient pagan tradition of fire worship.
A capital NYE
Gather on the South Bank to see the fireworks for free – or head to Park Plaza County Hall, where they are auctioning a party package to the highest bidder. It includes a 75m² suite with panoramic penthouse views across London comes stocked with Champagne and canapés to whoever bids the highest.
