Tenerife on track after Froome win

Chris Froome

Chris Froome’s Tour de France win wasn’t only celebrated in Blighty – the British riders success was also toasted in Tenerife.

Like last year’s tour winner Bradley Wiggins, Froome spent time last winter training on the Canary Island’s volcanic landscape and high altitude cycling routes.

Teide National Park, a Unesco World Heritage Site, is a popular training ground for teams. With altitudes varying from 2,000 to 3,000 metres above sea level, the roads traversing Teide provide the perfect challenge for cyclists and other athletes wanting to boost their performance in physically demanding environments. The island’s mild year-round climate also contributes to the perfect environment for training.

Miguel Angel Santos, Chief Executive of the Tenerife Tourism Corporation, said: “Mount Teide is Spain’s highest peak and undoubtedly provides a very tough training environment that brings out the very best in athletes.  It can be no coincidence that the last two winners of what is considered the toughest race in sport prepared for it here. “

As well as the most demanding cycle routes on Teide National Park, Tenerife offers a wide network of mountain biking tracks of varying difficulty and other sporting greats have joined in as well. The Brownlee brothers have trained on Tenerife, as have Everton and Newcastle.

Wheel to Wheel Holidays is one of the many companies that offer cycling trips to the island. They offer three night holidays from £169 per person, plus £50 for each day’s cycling. Flights are extra
