Planning this year’s family summer holiday? Then you’ll need some top tips for travelling with kids.

Nicky Cox, editor of First News – the national newspaper for young people – has joined Thomas Cook’s New Year campaign “Beach Holiday Ready” to give you some handy hints.

  1. Plan – Before you leave, plan ahead so that you can get the most out of your holiday when you get there. Research the surrounding area to see what local sights you and your family might enjoy. Check out any excursions your tour operator might offer, if you are travelling with one. Share interesting facts you’ve found out about the destination with your children so that they get the most out of the holiday experience.

  2. Kids Clubs – If you have children that like to be busy, make sure that you book a holiday where there is a children’s club or where there are lots of activities for them. You won’t have a good holiday yourself if you have children who are bored when you want to sunbathe!

  3. Download – If you have a long journey, use wifi to download films or favourite TV shows to a smart phone or tablet before you travel. It will take all the stress out of the journey. And don’t forget headphones! You can buy headphone splitters so that several people can listen to one device.

  4. Allow plenty of time – Children are naturally curious and like to look around and you don’t want to be worried about being late. If you’re flying, get to the airport early. Kids love exploring them – the shopping, cafes and watching the planes make it a day out in itself. The same applies to stations.
  5. Don’t forget medicine – Kids can quickly get ill and we all know how important it is to get high temperatures down. You can buy dose-sized sachets of liquid ; or Calpol which can be in your hand luggage, if flying. Antihistamine is also something you can’t travel without in case of allergic reactions from, for example, new foods, or bites/stings from insects.
