We’ve got our ION Iceland

New year, new adventure. And Discover the World has a couple of cool and exciting options in Iceland – a luxury, adventure hotel and self-catering Glacier Lodge.

Hotel ION, opening later next month, is an hour’s drive from Reykjavik, and close to the spectacular Thingvellir National Park. ION’s design reflects Icelandic history and the natural features of the country. It’s suspended on a series of pillars as seen in the image above – homage to first settler Ingolfur Arnarson who, en route to Iceland in the year 874, threw his high pillars overboard and sailed to where the gods brought them ashore.

The 46-room hotel is perfectly placed for outdoor activities including glacier walks, river rafting and snowmobiling. You’ll also be able to explore Iceland’s Golden Circle of natural wonders including Thingvellir, the double-tiered cascade of Gullfoss and the geothermal hotspot of Geysir with its erupting water.

The ION’s Northern Lights Bar has floor to ceiling windows where guests can watch the Northern Lights in the winter or midnight sun in the summer. There’s also a luxury spa with an outdoor hot tub.

Discover the World offers a three-night winter break from £815 per person and summer from £781. Prices are based on two adults sharing accommodation and include return flights from the UK, transfers, three nights B&B, SuperJeep excursion, lava caving, a two-course lobster dinner at a renowned lobster restaurant and entrance to the Blue Lagoon. Stays at Hotel Ion are also available as a Northern Lights special escorted holiday from £693 per person.

Glacier Lodge – a three-bedroom self-catering cottage on the rugged Snaefellsnes Peninsula with views of Snaefellsjokull volcano and a panorama across Faxafloi Bay – opens in February. The lodge, sleeping eight, is close to the pretty fishing village of Arnastapi, just an hour’s walk along a coastal path (or five minutes by car). Adventures include hiking trails, sailing excursions, whale and bird watching opportunities as well as touring the Golden Circle.

You can book the lodge as part of a four-night self-drive break with prices from £734 per adult including return flights from the UK, three nights in the lodge, one night B&B in Hotel Klettur and car rental.
