Mount Everest may be in the spotlight this year celebrating 60 years since the first ascent by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, however next month sees another anniversary for the world’s highest peak with April 3 marking 80 years since the first flight over Everest, made by British aviation pioneers Lord Clydesdale and David McIntyre.

Called the Houston-Mount Everest expedition, it was the first detailed and scientific survey of the Himalaya region, involving two bi-planes modified with supercharged engines, heated clothing and oxygen systems. It was one of the more ambitious aeronautical flights of the early 20th century, with the extremity endured by the crews of these aeroplanes helping demonstrate the need for pressurised cabins in modern aircraft.

Eighty years on, Everest has become a mainstream travelling destination for adrenaline seekers. Adventure holiday specialist World Expeditions has been operating trips to Everest since 1975 and today it offers more than 60 itineraries across the region.

Ranging from introductory level treks for first timers up to challenging treks for fitter and more experienced trekkers, World Expeditions trips to Everest include:
