If money were no object, caring Brits would treat mum to the holiday of  a lifetime according to a poll.

Some 57 per cent of us chose to spoil mum with a trip abroad, compared to 17 per cent who would pay off mum’s mortgage and nine per cent who would treat her to a new set of wheels.

Other grand gestures included refurbishing the house and an expensive Tiffany diamond necklace, both receiving 6 per cent of the vote, landscaping the garden (two per cent) and a London shopping spree (two per cent), in the poll conducted by online travel agent On The Beach.

The company’s chief marketing officer Alistair Daly said: “For the majority of us, our mother is the most important person in our lives and although we would like to give our mums any one of those expensive gifts, after years of working hard to give us the best start in life, most of us would love to treat our mum to a holiday of a lifetime.”
